How Long Do Motorized Blinds Last?

It can be very tempting to opt into the luxury of motorized window blinds and screens. The added benefit of being able to control your blinds by remote control or wall switch makes them a very convenient option when installing them in your home. This is especially handy for windows or skylights that are difficult to reach without a step-ladder.

While all have motorized functionality, some models can be operated manually in the case of a power outage, or if the batteries in the remote control have run dry. However, there are others that do not have this option available, and will, unfortunately, remain stuck open or closed until the power problem is resolved. We often get the question here at Rose Sun Window Coverings as to when you may need to replace your blinds, or how often one might need to replace the batteries.

Let’s tackle the battery question first. There are a few different types of motorized blinds that could have batteries to control the motorized device itself, for the remote control, or a combination of the two. The internal battery life will depend on the weight of the blinds, the size of the window, and how often they are used, but on average will likely be changed four times a year.

It is recommended to use rechargeable lithium batteries as they perform better when consistently exposed to the sun when compared to traditional batteries. Some brands like Hunter Douglas suggest a battery life of up to one year when using lithium batteries. In terms of remote control lifespan, they last for approximately five years on average when the blinds are used twice a day, decreasing with extra use and with traditional alkaline batteries.

For motorized blinds in hard to reach areas, it would likely be more suitable to opt into those powered by a D.C. power supply, which should be installed by a professional electrician. With this feature comes the benefit of never having to change internal batteries, but also comes with the downside of potentially becoming non-functional in a power outage. The good news, however, is that these window coverings could last a lifetime without replacement, so long as they remain mechanically sound. Many motorized blinds come with a lifetime warranty, which only excludes the batteries and any damage suffered by client tampering or misuse.
