When it comes to window coverings, there are a variety of options to choose from. However, we at Rose Sun Window Coverings are frequently asked if we use the terms blinds and shades interchangeably, and if there is, in fact, a difference between the two. We are here to tell you that there is a distinct difference, and choosing between them can be highly dependent on your lighting needs.

Blinds

This is the typical type of window covering you might be accustomed to seeing in most modern homes today. Blinds usually consist of horizontal slats, which can be raised and lowered to cover more or less of your window, or tilted to allow further adjustment. They are often made of solid materials like wood, vinyl or metal, which allows a great variety when it comes to styling your windows! The greatest advantage to blinds is their adjustability when fully extended, giving you a great amount of control over the light entering your room. Naturally, slats are not always optimal at completely blocking light, and you may discover that even when fully closed, some blinds will still let light through.

Due to their excellent variability and adjustability, blinds are ideal for spaces like bedrooms and offices. Getting just the right amount of light can be crucial for waking up in the morning, or reducing eye strain during a long day at work. With the many materials and designs available, you can express your creativity in many different ways, and create a room with your own unique personality!

Shades

Although less common than blinds, shades are by no means less useful. These coverings generally consist of one piece of fabric which raises and lowers, which covers your window the most completely. Shades are excellent at blocking light, and semi-transparent shades are great as insulators. Unlike blinds, shades allow light to pass through them, rather than between them, which means they are the preferred choice for insulation, and will do a better job of keeping a room cool in the summer. As a result, some families opt into shades in their bedrooms to better regulate the temperature of their room to get that much needed sleep.

When it comes to complete darkness, opaque shades are ideal for completely blocking out unwanted rays, but lack the adjustability of blinds. This could be the covering of choice for skylights and home theatres, where you may wish to block as much light as possible.
